Five reasons you should lose weight


Being overweight or obese means having a body weight that is above the healthy range for your height. This healthy weight range is calculated in terms of BMI (Body mass index) and it is between 18-24. A BMI above 24 is classified as overweight and below 18 is underweight. Having a high BMI is associated with so many health risks which could result in a low quality of life. That is why deciding to lose weight will benefit you in the following ways.

1. Reduce your risk of developing Diabetes

It is a known fact that there is an association between being overweight and developing diabetes and there have been instances where people have been able to reverse diabetes by losing weight.

2. Reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure

Just like it is with diabetes, being overweight also increases the risk of developing high blood pressure and if you already have hypertension the control of your blood pressure will be more difficult achieve.

3. Improve your bone health

There are no fat skeletons, so you would do you bones and joints a world of good if you would lose some weight. Look at it like this; if the pillars that are supposed to hold a building up are overloaded with concrete they will buckle under the weight.  This is the same way it feels for our bone and joints. Therefore look after your bones and joints by losing weight and they will in turn be there for you when you need them.

4. Reduce your risk of developing cancer

Being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing certain cancers such as breast, womb and stomach cancers. Cancers can cause a lot of symptoms, they can be debilitating and can be difficult to treat, so we should do all we can to reduce our risk of developing them.

5. Prevent stroke and heart attack

Heart attacks and strokes result from blockage of blood vessels in the heart and the brain and these blockages are usually made up of fat. Having the right body weight will reduce the likelihood of having excessive bad fat in the bloodstream.
