How to keep your kidneys healthy

The Kidney is an organ in the body that is responsible for filtering the blood and making urine. Most people have two kidneys located at the back of the body in the abdomen as shown in the picture below.

The kidneys are vital organs in the body and looking after them should be a priority. The following measures will help maintain the health of your kidneys.

Drink water


Drinking adequate amount of water will ensure that you are well hydrated and being well hydrated promotes the health of the kidneys. The warmer the weather, the more you need to ensure that you are drinking enough water.

Eat a healthy diet


A good balanced diet is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. Ensure that you eat meals that are rich in vitamins and minerals. Fruits and vegetables should be a component of you diet. Also make sure that you minimize your intake of salt.

Manage your blood pressure and blood sugar levels


If you suffer from high blood pressure or diabetes, it is important that you keep this under control by having regular reviews with your doctor or nurse. If don’t have either of these conditions ensure you take as much steps as you can to prevent them.
