What is the prostate?
The prostate is a small gland about the size of a table-tennis ball. It is a part of the male reproductive system and is located between the base of the penis and the anus. Women don’t have a prostate. The prostate gets bigger as men get older.
What does function does the prostate perform?
The prostate produces some of the fluid which mixes with the sperm to make semen.
What happens to the prostate as men get older?
As most men grow older, the size of the prostate increases. As it gets bigger, it can squeeze on the urethra (The tube through which urine flows out of the bladder) which can result in some difficulty in passing urine. This problem usually starts to be noticed as men reach the age of 50 years. Generally about 8 out every 10 men will eventually develop enlargement of the prostate.
